Meet the Gardener
Meet Thomas Cheng MISM, a specialist jazz pianist and educator in Salford. Backed by 6,000+ hours of coaching and a dual SAA/ESA Suzuki certification, discover his specialist pedigree.

Hi, I’m Thomas
Music has never been just a “subject” to me—it’s been my first language. Long before I established my specialist studio here in Salford, I was a student just like yours, sitting at a piano trying to decode the patterns of the keys and find my own creative voice.
I know exactly what it feels like to navigate the rigid boundaries of traditional expectations, and ultimately, to discover the pure joy of making music that feels authentic, spontaneous, and entirely your own.
The Classical Foundation & Children’s Safety
My teaching method is built upon rigorous classical training and an absolute commitment to professional standards. I hold an ATCL Diploma from Trinity College London and a Diploma in Collaborative Piano Studies (CUSCS). To deeply master the pedagogy of early childhood development, I completed my intensive Suzuki method training at Holy Names University (California) across Units 1–4, becoming a registered Suzuki Piano Teacher under both the European Suzuki Association (ESA) and the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA).
As a Registered Private Teacher under the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM), my studio adheres to the highest code of professional ethics in the UK. For your absolute peace of mind, I hold a full, up-to-date DBS Enhanced Disclosure with Barred List Check, ensuring an elite-level, completely secure environment for your child’s musical education.

Theoretical Rigor: Mastering Jazz Harmony
True musical freedom requires a deep, structural understanding of music theory. To bridge the classical ear with the modern improviser’s mind, I completed a Professional Certificate of General Music Studies (specializing in Jazz Improvisation, Composition, and Arrangement) and a Special Certificate of Keyboard Styles at the world-renowned Berklee College of Music. Furthermore, I earned my Jazz Piano Performance Diploma (ALCM) from the London College of Music, graduating with Distinction. This extensive training in pop, rock, blues, and complex jazz structures forms the exact scientific blueprint behind my signature teaching framework.
A Decade of Pedigree: Proven Teaching Milestones
The Jazz Junior UK Academy and my signature Mother-Tongue Jazz Method are the ultimate culmination of over 10 years of professional piano pedagogy. My framework is backed by concrete, real-world results:
- 100+ High-Level Classical Transfers: Personally guided over 100 advanced classical pianists (holding Grade 8 or above credentials) to successfully migrate their technical skills into the realm of fluid jazz improvisation.
- 6,000+ Hours of Studio Coaching: Accumulated over 6,000 hours of intensive 1-on-1 and ensemble teaching experience, allowing me to precisely diagnose and dissolve both the technical and psychological bottlenecks students experience during transition.
- 30+ Student Jazz Jam Sessions: Founded and hosted more than 30 live jazz jam sessions and workshops, providing a vital, real-world bridge for students to step away from the classroom and onto the live stage.
- 50+ Suzuki Children Guided: Nurtured over 50 young children through ear-first pedagogy, ensuring deep structural music comprehension before introducing complex sheet notation.
Today, alongside serving our local community as the Organist of St. James and All Souls Catholic Parish here in Salford, my mission is to give young learners back their creative agency, moving them away from being passive typists reading a page, to becoming true musical storytellers.
